Blarney Island 2007 "Thunder on the Chain" Week 1 of Points. June 14, 2007

Thursday June 14th 2007 marks the start of the weeks that count towards year end point totals and the crowning of the Midwest's fastest men on water. June 14th was a perfect day for racing at Blarney Island as the points season got under way. See how each class ran out for the first week of racing below. Lake Racer Outboard:

The Lake Racer Outboard class started out the 2007 season bringing Mike Giesler and Brett Vanderwall out to the start line for the first points race of the year. Geisler piloting a new boat for the first time, was sent back to dock by Vanderwall a Blarney Island veteran in round one. Race two paired up another Blarney Island veteran Sam Baker with Blarney first timer John Oleander. Bakers several repeat championships and veteran experience shows through and eliminates Oleander for the evening. Race three pairs up Chris Alby and Jim Switzer with Switzer taking the win and advancing to round two. Race four puts two Blarney veterans Jeff Houghtaling and Bob Albee head to head with Albee taking the win in his new race rig for 2007. Race one of round two pairs up Vanderwall with Baker. Vanderwall sets down a good pass and advances to the final. Switzer and Albee came out for race two round two with Albee checking in at the finish line first and advancing to take on Vanderwall in the final round. Albee squeezes out the win and takes home the first place points to start off the 2007 season!

Lake Racer In Board:

The Lake Racer Inboard Class started the season with Ron Silverstein son of Joel Silverstein a well known Blarney veteran pairing up with Keith Matjka for the first race of the points season with Matjka showing his veteran skills, eliminating young Silverstein in the first race of the year. John Bessler came to the line to race first round winner Keith Matjka with Kieth holding on and taking home the first place honors for week one in the Lake Racer outboard Class.

Pro Gas:

The most exciting outboard classes to watch at the Island fired off 2007 by pairing up two well known Blarney vets Tom Klement and Joe Peroceschi. Both pilots came to the line knowing they had to give it what they had with Tom Klement edging out the win over Joe Peroceschi.

Single Carburetor:

The single carb class brought out several well known names and Blarney Island favorites from past years. Two Blarney regulars Peter Selvey and Gary Frankowski head for the green flag to kick of the single carb class for 2007. Frankowski gets the jump at the light and finds the checker first, advancing him to the next round. Tim Rodway matches up with John Bessler for race two of round one and finds his way to the winners bracket. Joel Silverstein having a by in round one pairs up with Frankowski for the first race of round two but just can't quit get it done. Frankowski advances to the final round against Rodway. Gary Frankowski shows his veterans skills and how he has won the class several years in a row with a perfect pass that reaches the checkers first and secures him the evenings points.

Multi Carburetor:

John Anderson and Tim Rodway pair up to get things started in the Multi Carb class. Anderson coming out with a new power plant puts it to work and sends Rodway back to the dock in round one. Round two brings out some new excitement as John Groth debuts his new boat with monster power. Groth paired up with Gary Frankowski and proved he has has done his homework over the winter laying down an outstanding run taking the checkers ahead of Gary. Anderson with his new power plant comes out to pair up with another Blarney favorite and long time veteran Donny Little in the Chicago Bullet. Anderson puts his new motor to work and edges out Donny Little and heads for the final round. The final round brings a ton of excitement to the green light as Groth with his new boat and monster power plant match up with John Anderson who is also sporting huge new power. Both boats running extremely well, Groth once again lets no dust settle and takes the checkered flag securing the Multi Carb points for the first evening of racing in 2007.

Open Class:

Open class as always, brought major excitement to race night number one. First to the line was Peter Selvey and John Groth. Selvey showing what he's got and Groth having a little problem on the course advances Selvey to round two. Race two sends John Anderson and Dave Saldecki down the liquid drag strip with Saldecki trimming up, catching some air and putting on one heck of a show for the crowd. Some how Saldecki saves his rig from disaster and takes the race. Race one round two brings out two Blarney favorites Donny Little and Peter Selvey. Little shines through taking the checker and advancing to the final. A report that Saldecki broke in round one after his near disaster pass advanced Anderson in his place to take on Donny Little. Anderson displaying his skills and new power reaches the checkers first and secures the evenings points.

Evening Wrap Up:

What a great start to a new season and perfect first week of racing. With all the new excitement surfacing with rooky pilots and several new boats and power plants 2007 should make for an interesting race season and some tight competition. Meet us at the Island to experience some of the Midwest's best racing and one of the greatest boating bars in the world.
