2005 marks the 20th year of the "Smokin in the Cove" drag boat races near Jones Mill, Arkansas. The race is located on Lake Catherine surrounded by some of the most beautiful scenery Arkansas has to offer.  The race organized by Glen Brashers and Beam Me Up Scotty, announced by the one and only Roger Monroe marks the end of a season for many racers through out the United States.

Smokin in the Cove has one of the highest payouts in drag boat racing with a purse of $43,000.00 attracting boat racers from all over the United States. The 2005 event brought in racers from as far West as California,  as far East as New York, and even Wisconsin and Michigan. Racers came to compete in a bracket style race with both outboard and inboard boats. The bracket style competition consists of four brackets which are 6, 7, 8 and 9 second classes on a 1000 foot race course. Racers must stay in their respective bracket while trying to get as close to the lowest end of their time. For example a racer in the 8 second bracket would want to run as close to a time of  8.000sec as possible.

The 2005 event started with a beautiful day for racing and perfect conditions. 104 boats entered in the four classes. 33 entries in the 6 second class, 28 in 7sec., 17 in 8sec., and 26 in the 9 second class bringing some of the fastest boats and racers on water to the event. As the day progressed all competitors got in three qualifying runs and showed the crowd what they came to see.

The race directors called a drivers meeting after Friday's qualifying runs and announced that Hurricane Rita was promising bad weather for Sunday. The Drivers were informed the finals would be held Saturday in order to avoid the inclement weather. Upon return to the race course on Saturday morning we were informed that the hurricane was coming in with an attitude and the Core of Engineers was lowering Lake Catherine rapidly to compensate for the predicted flood waters. With the predicted weather and concern for the safety of the racers, the races were called and the payouts went to the top four qualifiers in each class. The dates for the 2006 Smoking in the Cove drag boat races are set for September 22, 23, and 24th of 2006! A race you will not want to miss!
